Night of the Pasar Malam

My take on the blackout. So, as I was furiously taking batteries out of Josh's toys just incase the blackout lasted longer than expected, Jen's mum calls and asks if everything is okay. I was pretty amused as she mentioned that "the whole Bishan is black 'cept for the Pasar Malam..." We were there just an hour ago. Past the worries of how to warm up the milk when the baby wakes up a few hours later (I decided that my 50 over tealights for the altar would do the job), I was reminded of the well lit pasar malam I used to go to near Lower Pierce Reservoir. Those scenes are somehow lit in that warm tungsten lighting. I wonder if they were kerosene lamps.

Well take heart everyone, a Mauritian I know says the blackout reminded him of cyclones, except that over there, it is darker without the cars going by.

Sparrows in the field

This was my most favorite moment ever. We were walking towards the river one evening and as we were walking along a pavement next to an open field, Josh seized the day and ran into the field as he always does when he sees a grassy field. He roused some sparrows to his bewilderment and started chasing them. It was endless fun for him as the sparrows settled several meters away and he got to chase them and watch them fly only to settle close by for him to chase again. His laughter and silly little run bespeckled the field with bouquets of joy. I am glad I had my newly upgraded Samsung phone to capture the moment albeit a little blur. You can see Josh if you look closely.

The other dolphin dream

This dream happened as I was finishing up my thesis and preparing to leave and go to Kew. Jen and I were unprepared and anxious about leaving home and staying in a foreign country. I remember that we had landed and were going to meet up with my employer and friend at, of all places, Macdonalds. As we were walking along the road, I remember that there was someone stalking us and trying to prevent us from reaching our destination. But finally I met my friend and Jen stayed behind and somehow got lost, I was worried but somehow kept on going along. So I was brought along to a building and up a spiral staircase. Surrouding this staircase that went three levels up was a huge aquarium. As I walked up, two dolphins, a mother and her young about half her size, swam towards me close to the glass. The moment was quite tender and I gazed upon them for quite a while. It was as though they bade me goodbye as them turned and swam away and dissappeared into the waters. Almost a year later, I found myself at Heathrow at the latter part of our stay, seeing a pregnant Jen off and was reminded of this dream...

Orca dream

I had a dream last night. The dream occurred past 6 am ( cos I woke up to feed Matthew at that time and the dream happened after that). At the start of my dream, I found my self in a sort of pool or canal which was embanked by a house and its steps. Jen was holding Matt (5months old) and he was in a white printed t-shirt and wearing his diapers. I was opposite them. It was a cool and very bright afternoon and the walls of the house was white. The water was bright turquoise in colour and we were waist deep in it. Joshua was standing near the steps and playing near us in the water. Matt was laughing as Jen help him by both his hands and swung him playfully and gently on the waters suface. A killer whale (Orca) swam and arched its body behing Jen playfully, we weren't startled but I did tell Jen to hang on close to Matt (not sure if they would bite Matt) but generally we were quite happy for the Orca to swim nearby, another Orca, a juvenile joined us and swam near Joshua and it seemed to be more like a bottled nose dolphin and I could see it smile. The fins of the two dolphins were very clear to me. Generally the feeling was one of blissful happiness and peace.

Halfway, I found myself in a sort of passage way near the steps of the house near the water and I saw a boy with glasses( his glasses had those hooks to keep it in place behind the ears - later in the day, a colleague would tell me to wear those in place of the string I have on my specs). He looked a bit lost but not terribly. Just a bit on his own. In my dream I was wondering if he was an older son we didn't know about. In my dream I looked toward Jen with a puzzled looked but I soon turned my attention to the boy and wondered again

In the later part of the dream, I saw a coffin being carried of by bearers (only could see the hands of the bearers); they leaned the top of the coffin towards me to show me a symbol on top of it. It was like a catholic symbol, gold in colour very shiny. It consisted of an "R" symbol, on the right of it was an ornate open circle with patterns within. So it looked like "Ro" with the "o" smaller than the R. In my dream I felt it was a Marian icon with the symbol of the Eucharist on the right. I didn't feel terrified by the coffin but I was curious about the symbol and as that welled up in my mind , the bearers leaned it towards me to show it to me. It was a religious symbol.

It is funny how I remembered the dream so vividly, but generally speaking, the dream gave me a good feeling and it felt deep, like the other dolphin dream I had before I went to Kew.
